Our Favorite Hot Cocoa for Two

Hot chocolate is a must-have for cold winter days. Nothing’s better than snuggling up with your sweetie & a warm mug of cocoa. It’s easy to grab a packet of powder, but homemade hot chocolate with simple ingredients is the best way to go.

Here’s our favorite hot chocolate recipe from A Couple Cooks:

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups soy milk (or milk)

woman sipping hot cocoa

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a glass measuring cup, place 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons honey, ¼ cup water, and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon. Microwave on high for about 20 seconds. (Alternatively, for the stovetop method, place these ingredients in a pan over medium heat.) Once heated, whisk the ingredients together until they form a smooth chocolate slurry.
  2. Add a bit of the soy milk and whisk it in to temper the hot mixture. Once it’s incorporated, add the remainder of the 2 cups of milk.
  3. Microwave for another 2½ to 3 minutes until hot. (For the stovetop method, heat the mixture over medium heat until hot, taking care to not let it boil.) Pour into mugs and enjoy.

Cheers to enjoying this on your next wintertime date!

5 Ways to Keep Your Kids Occupied on Date Night

It seems like that popular kid’s song should really go along the lines of “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby and no more time for k-i-s-s-i-n-g.” Your time is completely occupied with work and kids, and quality time with your sweetie often gets put on the back burner. Once your kids are out of the house, you’ll be left with lots of time with your spouse, so you’ve got to make sure you keep the spark alive. We did the work for you and found 5 great solutions to keep your kids busy while you enjoy your date night whether it be a movie on the couch, this month’s Datebox or whatever else you two might do during your quality time. 😉

KiwiCo Crates: KiwiCo is a subscription company for kids. They offer research-backed  STEM education boxes for kids from 24 months to 16 years and up! While the really young kiddos may need some assistance, the older kids can get going on their own and be completely immersed in learning while you and your boo have some quality time.

Komae Babysitting App: As the old saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Komae lets you meet other moms in your area, growing your village and giving you the ability to set up playdates and swap free sits when you need some alone time with your spouse! As of now, Komae’s Premium features are live on the app for $0, but only for a limited time. Retail value will be $10. But, right now, you can upgrade to premium for only $5 and lock in that price for life! Use code: DB50KOMAE for 50% off premium!

Cargo-Bot: According to NPD, 91% of kids age 2-17 play video games. Since your kids are already begging to play a game on your phone or tablet, download Cargo-Bot from the App Store. Cargo-Bot is great for kids ages 5 and up through adulthood. It teaches kids programming concepts, which could even lead to a future career in coding!

Crayola Window Markers: If your child is still toddling and not quite ready for bed, window makers are the way to go. This will keep them occupied while still within sight so you and honey can make something good to snack on and have good conversation without worrying about the kids.

Craft a City – Pull out a roll of kraft paper and have your child(ren) draw out a big city map. Ask them to draw all the streets and buildings. Once they’ve drawn it all out, they can use their Hot Wheels to drive all over town! Depending on their age you may want to supervise the drawing portion but once they are cruising, you are home free!

There are many options out there—these are just 5 of our favorites. Kids definitely shouldn’t be the only people you have quality time with, so be sure to make time for your boo! Did we miss your favorite tip? Share your go-to ways to keep the kiddos busy in the comments.

A Smoothie Recipe to Make You Salute Your Shorts!

In the Deep Deuce district of OKC, Wheeze the Juice is slinging smoothies and juices like they’ve been doing it since the ‘90s. Their shop is bursting with memorabilia and tunes that will completely transport you back to your younger years. Luckily for those of us at Datebox, we don’t have to travel far to get our fix.

We wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on our drink of choice, the Camp Anawanna smoothie, so we tested out our own rendition, bringing the delicious drink to your kitchen counter.

Things you’ll need for 2 smoothies:

3-4 frozen sliced bananas
1.5 cups frozen whole pitted dates
1 cup peanut butter (creamy or crunchy works)
2 tablespoons cacao nibs
3-4 cups almond milk (we used unsweetened vanilla)
2 teaspoons honey
Pinch of salt

Throw it all in a blender and process until smooth. (Dates can be hard to blend, so don’t give up!)

Pro tip: Add protein powder or flax seed for a more filling smoothie.

I’ll tell ya, there is no real science here. We suggest freezing portions of sliced bananas and dates in freezer bags to make this smoothie on the go! Share your pics and thoughts on this delicious treat with #HoneyAndBoo.

How to Rest When Life’s Hard

Life’s filled with unplanned twists and turns. Some are good, while some leave you stressed & off balance. How do you re-center after a crisis? Here are a few of our favorite ways to get back to a peaceful place.

  1. Meditate
    1. This is simply taking time to quiet your mind and focus on what’s going good in your life. What are you thankful for? What’s gone well lately that you would like to do more of? Think about these things and let your mind rest.
    2. We recommend doing this daily—preferably as you start your day. If you feel yourself moving to a place of negativity, remember that you’ve got things in your life that are good & positive. Keep your mind there instead.
  2. Rest
    1. It sounds simple, but think about how little time we actually take in a day to rest. Resting means putting away your smartphone, maybe running a warm bath, enjoying a glass of wine, and relaxing.
    2. Try these breathing exercises as you begin your relaxation:
      1. Pranayama
        1. This is the basic breathing technique for yoga. Simply breathe in 4 counts, then out 4 counts. Repeat and relax.
      2. Abdominal Breathing Technique
        1. Place one hand on your stomach and one hand on your chest. Breathe in 4 counts. Hold in your breath as you count to 7. Release breath through 8 counts. Repeat.
  3. Exercise
    1. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are like natural painkillers—they relax you and reduce stress. Exercise also helps you get better sleep. Plus, the more you deal with stress in healthy ways like this, the better you’ll be able to react & deal with future stress.

Bumps in the road are inevitable. But planning ahead and taking time for self-care are essential to living your best life even with hiccups. Namaste, friends!

Dos and Don’ts for Wedding Guest Outfits

Getting an invite to a fall wedding has my internal dialogue going somewhat along these lines: “Don’t do this to me. Love ya, but it’s already hard enough to find an outfit for weddings in the spring. How am I supposed to look cute and stay warm?” Cue diving deep into Pinterest til the wee hours of the morning, hoping I can find something cute, warm, and affordable—or even better, a new combination of something I already own.

Three things to try and be super conscious of when finding the outfit are ceremony time, wedding colors, and doing everything in your power to avoid anything with too much white or any shade of off-white.

It’s the bride’s time to shine y’all—don’t steal her thunder.

Considering ceremony time is really important so you can get a better idea of what style will fit the wedding. While you may be sure you want to rock a pantsuit, the type you go with and how you accessorize should be determined by the time of day. All black may look great for an evening wedding, whereas all black at a brunch reception will look harsh, so it’s best to opt for something lighter while staying aware of their wedding colors.

Keeping your outfit in line with their general color scheme is always a good idea. While you don’t want to match the bridal party, you also don’t want your outfit to stand out from the crowd or outshine the bride. In general, if you know the colors of the wedding are light pastels, don’t show up rocking your favorite red jumpsuit. On the other hand, if you know they’re using really fun, punchy colors, go wild, my friend.

While we’re on the color conversation, it feels like we shouldn’t have to say this, but it seems like at every wedding we attend, someone is ballsy enough to show up in a white dress with a slight floral pattern or a solid too-close-to-white-to-be-okay dress. Sure, if your friend is one of those girls who are super adventurous and is steering clear of the traditional white dress (God bless them; it’s always stunning), by all means, wear white—but otherwise, save yourself the dirty looks and don’t do it!

Costume Ideas for you and…BOO!

The great thing about Halloween is that once a year, we get to put on a killer outfit (pun intended) that we wouldn’t normally wear any other day of the year. You might be a chick who wears pearls on the reg but on Halloween, you & boo are rocking leather jackets and thick, black eyeliner. Maybe you’re a dude who works in accounting but on Halloween, you’re a ringmaster and your honey is your favorite circus animal. Whatever the case, every year, early fall nights are generally spent scouring Pinterest for the best couples’ Halloween costume you can find; hoping no other couples saw the same pin.

This year, we’ve done the hard work for you. Here are our favorite couples’ costumes right now:

Lady and The Tramp

Alien to His Astronaut

King and Queen of Each-other’s Hearts

Christopher Robin and a Belly-Full-Of-Hunny Pooh

The Mad Hatter to Her Alice

Pop-Eye and Olive Oil

Colonel Sanders’ Main Chick

JoAnna and Chip Gaines

The Tooth Fairy and Her Biggest Supplier

Merry Halloween — may it be scary and black. Use #HoneyandBoo to show off your creativity.

10 Best Date Night Movies

Two of the hardest decisions every couple faces are where to eat and which movie to watch. Worry no longer! Check out this list of 10 must-watch movies together. Goodbye decision fatigue, hello date night!

  1. 500 Days of Summer. If you’re looking for commitment, try this on for size. It’s romantic and sad, but it also makes you realize how special relationships are. Bonus points for any post-date conversations about defining your relationship.

  1. La La Land. Here’s to the dreamers. his flick will make you cry happy & sad tears in the most fun, charming way. Nominated for Best Picture, it’s a new take on musicals that’ll leave you and your date swooning. Who knows, this one may even inspire you both to dance the night away!

  1. All the Harry Potter movies. Not only are these the best movies of all time, but there are also seven of them—i.e.,plenty of follow-up dates to keep making out through…or watching. Your choice. See how much closer you end up sitting together by movie seven part two. Magical, indeed.

  1. The Avengers. OK, unexpected. But sometimes watching an action movie just fits better than a comedy or romcom. It’s got action, intrigue, & eye-candy actors, plus it’s captivating enough for both of you to enjoy. Win-win.

  1. The Lego Movie. If you’re wanting to find out how great your date’s sense of humor is, use this to test it out. It’s hilarious, witty, sarcastic, & entertaining enough for you to continue making jokes the rest of the night. You’re welcome.

  1. Up. Pixar films are a sure-fire way to elevate a date to the next level. And this one is simply beautiful. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll remember your childhood, & it’ll provoke get-to-know-you discussion like adult movies just can’t.

  1. About Time. Not only will this movie make you experience all the romance, but it’ll also give you the fuzzies about all your relationships. This movie makes you grateful, brings you to tears, & warms your heart in a way few can.

  1. The Family Stone. We love movies about big, crazy families. This movie’s set during Christmas and you get to see all the different family dynamics & personalities mash together. It’s like drinking the perfect cup of eggnog—but delicious like coffee instead of disgusting like we all know eggnog is.

  1. Crazy. Stupid. Love. This movie has one of the most hilarious, interwoven plots you won’t see coming. It’s a laugh-worthy romcom that’ll have you tearing from the laughter and having the time of your life. Maybe you’ll even attempt that iconic dance afterward. 😉

  1. Little Miss Sunshine. You guys. This. Movie. It’s like watching a real-life family for a weekend. They have quirks, problems, & a lot of love for each other. Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, and Abigail Breslin are stunning in their roles. It really is a can’t-miss movie.

So next movie date, skip the 30-minute debate over what to watch and work your way down the list. You can thank us later.

3 Cosmetics You NEED This Season

At Datebox headquarters, one thing we’ve all been talking about for weeks is how excited we are for the start of fall. We all seem to have different reasons. Everyone is excited for it to finally sink below 90 degrees here in Oklahoma, and for a lot of the guys, it means really getting into the thick of football season and seeing how their fantasy football team will do.

For the girls, though, it’s something so much simpler. We’re late into the summer at this point and are stuck on the routine of switching between 2 summer makeup looks. With the arrival of fall, it’s time to bust out the darker colors and maybe even treat ourselves with a new lipstick or eyeshadow palette.

Here are 3 products we’ve got all the heart eyes for:

The Naked Palette by Urban Decay has long been a staple in most girls’ daily routine. The Naked Heat Palette spices things up with 12 different tones inspired by a fall favorite: bonfires.

Kat Von D has been killing the liquid lipstick game for over a year now. If you didn’t get your hands on Lollita II, what are you even doing with your life?! This season, step it up a notch and try out Vampira, a deep reddish burgundy liquid lipstick.

Last but not least, remember your cheeks. In the fall, we advise focusing more on blush than bronzer. Sure, bronzer keeps you from looking like a ghost, but blush will help you look flirty and touched by the cold air. Try some prestigious BECCA mineral blush in Nightingale for the perfect fall flush.

Comment below with your go-to cosmetics for fall and use #honeyandboo to share your fall look, cause girl, you’re cuter than all the pumpkins in the patch.

iPhone X-tremely Cool New Features

Once again, Apple’s dazzling us all with their new iPhone X. We just can’t seem to get enough.

At Datebox, most of us are still sporting iPhone 6s — we’ve got one dude with a 5c. And no, we don’t understand either. But interestingly, only one person in the office is planning to jump ship right away for the new generation. Even though most of us won’t be in line to order one, we’re loving the new features on the iPhone X.

Here are the top 4 mind-blowing features of Gen X:

Animoji

All the possibilities with Animoji made me pretty pumped. I mean, you’re telling me I can be a unicorn or panda and it will mimic my facial expressions?!

Bitmoji no more. Sign me up! Side note: This quickly faded to concern because I have basically 3 facial expressions in my catalog.

Front-Facing Portrait Mode

Awwww SHOOT! I am here to tell you that the best photo ever taken of me was with an iPhone 7Plus using portrait mode. God bless us everyone, because our newsfeeds are all about to be stocked with selfies. And I mean STOCKED. This new camera paired with our blog post Take the Selfie Your Face Deserves — all I can say is:

Facial Recognition

Facial recognition is completely mind-blowing. I have two thoughts on this one: 1) Good luck to y’all snoopers out there because checking your boo’s phone just got harder. 2) Good luck to all the amazing makeup artists out there whose different looks make them look like a new person every day, because I’m still not sure if this will work for you!
