3 Fantastic Cities for a Romantic Weekend Getaway on a Budget

Getting time away with your sweetie doesn’t have to make your wallet cringe. If you’re looking for more than just a cheap-pizza-and-Netflix weekend, here are some of the best places you can have a fun, romantic weekend getaway without arguing about how much you spent on the way home.

Chicago, IL

Ah, the Windy City. Brimming with world-class museums, excellent deep-dish pizza, and surprisingly wonderful beaches, Chicago is the perfect getaway spot for any couple. The Art Institute is home to Van Gogh’s famous painting The Bedroom, as well as work from Monet, Renoir, Stieglitz…the list goes on and on. Be sure to grab a famous Chicago hot dog at Portillo’s and some delicious deep-dish at Giordano’s.

If you buy the Chicago CityPass before your trip, you’ll save money on admission at all the best spots in town, including Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, and the Museum of Science and Industry.

Highlights: pizza, pizza, & more pizza, famous museums, fantastic shopping, and The Bean!

Pro Tip: You can get an awesome view of the city & save some extra cash by skipping the Skydeck and heading to the Signature Room—located on the 96th floor of the John Hancock Center—for a cocktail.

Kansas City, MO

Quickly becoming one of the nation’s best foodie scenes, Kansas City is famous for its barbecue, but has plenty more to offer. If want to take your taste buds on a trip they won’t forget, try Beer Kitchen. Their signature dish, Drunken Donuts, will make your entire trip worth it.  While you’re visiting, don’t miss the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the National WWI Museum, or the landmark Union Station.

If you’re looking for some extra adventure, check out the Storm Blaster water coaster at Schlitterbahn Waterpark.

Highlights: great barbeque, fun water parks, & historic landmarks.

Pro Tip: Schedule your trip to enjoy First Friday (conveniently on the first Friday of every month) in the Crossroads district. It’s one of the most popular events for locals that includes galleries, studios, local businesses, and live entertainment from 5 to 9 p.m.

Nashville, TN

Whether you love country music or can’t stand it, there’s something great for you in Nashville. Spend a night in historic Union Station Hotel downtown & walk down Honky Tonk Row. You’ll find a strip of great bars & clubs known for the famous country stars who’ve performed there. If you love country music, make sure you take a tour of the legendary Grand Ole Opry.

If country music isn’t quite your thing, hit up some of Nashville’s amazing coffee shops, like Frothy Monkey, CREMA, and Barista Parlor. I recommend going to all 3—it’s worth it. Try killer burgers at The Pharmacy or Burger Up. For all the vegetarians, hit The Wild Cow. It’s super delicious for carnivores & herbivores alike. Go bowling in a chic-industrial space at Pinewood Social, which serves great cocktails and appetizers.

Highlights: country music heaven, hip coffee shops, & delicious food.

Pro Tip: Head a little bit south & visit Franklin, a suburb of Nashville. It’s full of cute shops and restaurants and is called “America’s Favorite Main Street” by locals.
